28 Jan 2013 200th Anniversary of the publication of Pride & Prejudice In 2013 we will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's best loved novel. Events will take place throughout the year and the programme will be available soon.

28 Jan 2013 The Story of Pride and Prejudice Exhibition (mid January - May) Throughout 2013 the Museum will be celebrating 200 years of Pride and Prejudice starting with an in-house exhibition which explores the story of the novel, the history of its writing and what it means to visitors to the museum today. On display will be the letter Jane wrote to her sister Cassandra on first receiving her copy of the book. Jane refers to her novel as 'my own darling child'. Also featured will be the famous Hugh Thomson illustrations which were first included in an edition of 1894, and first editions of the book. Pride and Prejudice has been published in editions throughout the world. Included in the exhibition will be editions in a number of foreign languages which are held by the museum. Throughout the year the museum hopes to add editions from all over the world to its collection.

2 Mar 2013 Writing Workshop - “But Intricate Characters Are The Most Amusing Relationships, Characters and Conflict. Elizabeth Bennet was a studier of character, and so, of course, was Jane. This workshop will give you practice at writing about all sorts of relationships – romantic, friendly and difficult. With examples from Jane Austen’s work and contemporary fiction, we will be looking at creating and capturing the sort of convincing characters and relationships that are at the heart of all good fiction. This workshop will be suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced writers. The workshops will be led by Rebecca Smith. Rebecca was our Writer in Residence during 2009 and 2010. She teaches creative writing at the University of Southampton and really enjoys meeting writers of all ages and levels of experience. Rebecca’s first three novels are published by Bloomsbury. Her first novel for children was shortlisted for The 2012 Kelpies Prize. Jane Austen’s Guide to Modern Life’s Dilemmas, her first non-fiction book, has just been published on both sides of the Atlantic. The workshops will run from 11am until 3.30pm. Tea and coffee will be provided. You are welcome to arrive from 10.30am and to look around the Museum before we start. 16 Mar 2013 Writing Workshop - “Fifty Miles of Good Road” Characters’ Journeys and Journeys for Characters Jane Austen loved to send her characters on journeys, whether to Derbyshire, Bath, London, Portsmouth, the seaside… We see how their journeys change them and the changes in their hearts. This workshop will look at using journeys in fiction and ways of showing the inner journeys that your characters must make. We’ll look at ways of ensuring that readers will want to stay with you until the very end. It will be suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced writers. 1 Apr 2013 Scenes from Pride and Prejudice Join us on Easter Monday to enjoy scenes from Jane's best-loved novel in the garden of the house where she prepared the book for publication. Ruffled Umbrella, a small theatre company who create theatre that captivates and surrounds an audience perform scenes from Pride & Prejudice in the House and Garden. Museum entrance fee applies. No additional charge

7 Apr 2013 'Music! It is of all subjects my delight' Informal recitals on the Museum's Clementi piano by Anthony Noble. To include works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven Well known as a scholar and performer working in the field of 17th- and 18th-century keyboard music and renowned for his ‘fine sense of phrasing’, and the ‘poetry’ of his interpretations, it is always a pleasure to hear Dr Anthony Noble play in the Drawing Room of the Museum. These informal recitals will take place on the afternoon of the first Sunday of the month from April – August. 7th April 5th May 2nd June 7th July 4th August.

10 Apr 2013 'She was very accomplished' During 2013 we will hold a number of 'Accomplishment' days when the staff and volunteers at Jane Austen's House Museum will demonstrate their 'accomplishments'. From knitting to quilting, from embroidery to covering screen! Join us on one of the following days and find out more. 17 May 2013 Pride and Prejudice Reading Relay As a part of the national Museums at Night programme we will be undertaking a full reading of Pride and Prejudice on Friday 17th May. Museums at Night is a festival of inspiring after hours cultural events in museums, galleries and heritage sites. Further details to follow.

5 Oct 2013 Looking at the clothes inside Jane Austen's wardrobe An illustrated talk by Alison Carter, Chair of the Southern Counties Costume Society. Using letters and novels Alison Carter explores what Jane Austen wore, where and when she bought and made her clothes, and what fabrics and colours she liked.With particular reference to the years 1809-1817 when Jane lived in Chawton, Alison will also link Jane's own clothes to those described in Pride and Prejudice and the subtle differences that exist as the novel was first drafted in the late 1700s. Alison warns that 'I always talk about the underwear, too....' Illustrated with images from fashion plates, portraits and surviving period garments this promises to be a fascinating glimpse into Jane's wardrobe. 2.00pm Tickets: £10.00 Adults £7.50 Concessions £5.00 Students
